§ 8-78. Application; examination.

  • (a)

    Any person desiring to engage in or work at the electrical business as a master or journeyman electrician shall make application to the building official to be examined as to their qualifications and competency as electricians. A score of 75 percent or higher on the prescribed examination is necessary to qualify for certification. Two years of practical electrical experience is required to qualify for taking the journeyman examination and four years of practical experience is required to qualify to take the master electrician examination. No person shall be eligible for certification as a master electrician until having met the requirements for and having been certified as a journeyman electrician. Applicants who qualify shall, upon payment of the certificate fee, receive a certificate authorizing them to work as a master electrician or journeyman electrician.

    (b)

    Any person desiring to work as an apprentice electrician shall make application to the building official. Applicants, upon payment of the certificate fee, shall receive an apprentice electrician certificate authorizing them to work as an apprentice electrician. Those apprentice electricians who provide verification that they have been actively engaged as apprentice electricians for a period of one year or more, shall be designated an apprentice electrician II. All other persons making application for certification as apprentice electricians shall be designated apprentice electricians I.
