§ 8-77. Certificate required; exceptions.

  • (a)

    It is unlawful for any person, except as otherwise provided in this section, to perform any electrical work, without possessing a valid, unrevoked master electrician's certificate or journeyman electrician's certificate issued by the city. A journeyman electrician shall not perform any electrical work except under the employment of or direct supervision of a master electrician. It is not a violation of this section for an apprentice electrician to assist a master electrician or journeyman electrician in the performing of electrical work.

    (b)

    It is unlawful for any person to work as an apprentice electrician without possessing a valid, unrevoked apprentice electrician's certificate. Every apprentice electrician shall carry an apprentice electrician certificate, as issued by the city, at all times while in the performance of their duties as an apprentice electrician.

    (c)

    Any person may perform any electrical work in or upon their own home, shop, garage or other structure which they own and occupy; provided, however, any person performing such electrical work shall secure a permit for such work. The work shall be inspected and approved by the building official, and all applicable inspection fees shall be paid.

    (d)

    It is unlawful for any person, including electrical contractors, master electricians or journeyman electricians, to permit or allow any number of apprentice electricians to assist a master electrician or journeyman electrician in performing electrical work in excess of the following ratios:

    (1)

    One apprentice electrician I for each master or journeyman electrician;

    (2)

    Two apprentice electricians II for each master or journeyman electrician.
