§ 6-55. Rabies vaccination for animals released from the animal shelter.

Latest version.
  • If the personnel at the animal shelter are not qualified to administer a rabies vaccination, an owner, keeper or harborer, or person adopting an animal, may comply with the requirement for rabies vaccinations set forth in sections 6-53 and 6-54, by depositing $10.00 with the operator of the shelter and signing a written agreement with the city to obtain such rabies vaccination, and then actually obtaining the rabies vaccination within 30 days. Upon such a deposit and written agreement, the animal may be released to the owner, keeper or harborer, or person adopting, and the operator shall provide the person with a written receipt for the deposit. The deposit shall be refunded, or paid directly to the veterinarian, when the operator of the animal shelter is provided written documentation from said veterinarian that the rabies vaccination has been accomplished. If said written documentation has not been provided to the operator within 40 days after release of the animal from the animal shelter, the deposit shall be forfeited and the operator shall surrender it to the city treasurer. It shall be unlawful for any person who adopts or redeems an animal hereunder to fail to comply with this section, or with the terms of the written agreement set forth above, and the forfeiture of the deposit shall not be a defense to, nor prevent, a prosecution hereunder.
